How is gray divorce a health risk?

On Behalf of | Apr 2, 2020 | Divorce

Divorce is one of the most stressful experiences that a person can face. No matter how young you are, it can have effects on your health. As you age, however, these effects may be more prominent. According to U.S. News, for couples aged 50 and above, the rate of divorce doubled since the 90s. Amongst these divorcing couples, psychological and physical ailments are numerous.

For those who divorce at an older age, professionals call it gray divorce. With gray divorce, there are more risks to a person’s health than when they divorce at a younger age.

Divorce causes risky behavior

When you are in the middle of a divorce, you may exhibit more risky behaviors. This includes overspending, impulsive shopping and even over eating or substance abuse. Often couples engage in more dangerous or risky behavior during a divorce. This is especially dangerous when you are older or have health problems.

Divorce causes sedentary behavior

Exercise is important, no matter how old you are. Divorce leads to serious mood changes and depression that can add to sedentary behavior. When you are sedentary, you could risk high blood pressure or diabetes. If you already have these conditions, then the sedentary behavior may exacerbate it.

Divorce causes insomnia

Insomnia can wreak havoc on your body. When you have sleep deprivation, it can lead to cognitive changes. For instance, you may suffer from forgetfulness. This forgetfulness can lead to missing a dose of medication. In addition, you may not have any energy so you cannot be as active as you used to be.
